Maryland Crab Cakes Lose National Vote

Roll Call logo-taste_americaMaryland crab cakes lost out to Utah’s cherry cobbler in Roll Call’s 2014 Taste of America poll. The Capitol Hill newspaper held an open, online vote on the best food in America.

Maryland crab cakes made it to the final round, but in the end, couldn’t squash the two-time winner, cherry cobbler. The Chesapeake Bay area favorite was also up against Oregon blackberry pie, Iowa bacon, Illinois’ deep dish pizza, Maine lobster roll, Kentucky-state’s fried chicken and North Carolina BBQ.

Crab cakes knocked out New York’s buffalo wings, 5,168 to 4,587, in the previous round. But those were small numbers compared to the other voting. Blackberry pie, for example, got 14,854 votes in the semi-finals, pushing out Montana steak.

The final vote count wasn’t released, just the name of the winner. Here are the final brackets.

Previous winners:

2013 – West Virginia pepperoni rolls

2012 – Utah cherry cobbler

2011 – Northern Mariana Island apigigi
