Top Maryland Craft Beers Announced. And the Winner Is….

Peabody Heights Brewery Old Oriole Park Bohemian Lager is Maryland’s top beer for 2015. Other Maryland Craft Beer Competition overall winners are: 2nd place – Evolution Craft Brewery’s Lot #6 Double IPA, 3rd place – RavenBeer’s The Cask, and Honorable Mention – Franklins Brewery for their Bombshell Blonde.

Grand Master judge Jeff Sanders noted that even after nearly 100 minutes of discussion, the Bohemian Lager “still had the same shine, same great flavor, and was not impacted by air nor temperature,” a rarity for the style.

Fourteen beers from around the state received “Best in Category,” joining 14 beers winning gold medals, 14 silver medalists and six bronze medal winners.

Twenty-six Maryland craft brewing companies took part in the Brewers Association of Maryland’s 10th annual competition.

“Twenty out of 26 breweries earned medals, proving that Maryland’s brewers and their beers are diverse, with no single brewery dominating the competition,” said Brewers Association of Maryland Executive Director, Kevin Atticks.

City Paper says this beer needs to replace Natty Boh as Baltimore’s beer. (For those of you who don’t know yet, National Bohemian was bought by Pabst Brewing Company is made in North Carolina and Georgia.)

Brandon Weigel with City Paper writes, “The Old Oriole Park has got the nice light body of a lager with a slight finish of cream flavor. It’s damn good: The Brewers Association of Maryland recently gave the gold medal to the Old Oriole Park in the pale lagers/pilsner category of the 10th Annual Maryland Craft Beer Competition. A sixer will run you about $7—while that’s not as cheap as Boh, it’s a downright bargain-basement price for a craft brew. And hey, it’s even got Bohemian in the name!”

Second Place – Evolution Craft Brewery • Lot #6 Double IPA

Third Place – RavenBeer • The Cask

Honorable Mention – Franklins Brewery • Bombshell Blonde
